Great to here about your trip - sounds like we're doing a similar thing at a similar time (www.drive-to-oz.com) – wanna exchange links on our sites? Driving in China – crapping myself about this as currently been quoted between £12k and £35k and, as I’m travelling with my family, I can’t see any other route that can safely avoid China. What are your plans for this? Be great to hear from you. Many thanks Graham Naismith +44(0)7904 237471 www.drive-to-oz.com P.S. Your email address is bouncing back

We were getting quotes in the same region while we were still in the UK, which meant we pulled the plug on China altogether. However, while in Malaysia, we met some guys who claimed to go into China quite a lot. They were talking more along the lines of £2.5k - £5k. I haven't got full details at the moment, but I could ask Dan when he comes round later today for fuller information. Nick Moylan PS We're now being featured in Land Rover Monthly magazines, with a monthly series of articles where Dan is telling his stories, you can see some on our press pagesPPS. Dan is going to be giving a lecture/ talk about his expedition in Bristol tomorrow as part of the wilderness lecturesPPPS! Graham, I have just noticed from your website that you are from Purley, Dan is based in Beckenham if you wanted to arrange meeting and chatting about his travels personally. email him on daniel -at- lonewolftransglobal -dot- com

Nick Yes - it's a thin line in wanting to open their eyes, embrace new cultures and experience things that most people never will and giving them a couple of PSPs and Toy Story on DVD for the entire journey! We've got odds on the first "when are we going to be there"!

Hmmm... website.... It seems to be playing second fiddle lately to the magazine articles etc. I have stepped away from the website myself now, as I need to concentrate on my final year of studies.
However, we have been working over some radical redesigns of the website, which, due to its size, has become very unwieldy.
These include a much better vehicle section, which hadn't really been updated since the expedition left a year ago; putting the journal onto a map, or something like that; adding a video and photo gallery; adding a section for future events, news and announcements;
When/if the book comes out, we will probably remove the majority of the journals, and have only a photo gallery with captioned photos and videos. (due to limited number of photos we can put in a book). This will be because the book will obviously be based around the journals.
In other news, we managed to sell the trailer!!!!! We were put in contact with the buyer through Trek Overland themselves, a Yorkshireman who is really into Camel Trophy. Fortunately, he was undeterred by the damage to the paintwork, which was all cosmetic, as he plans to repaint the trialer in sandglow yellow.
I will try to get Dan to publish some more photos, videos and journals soon, as I do think that needs to be put up in it's entirety before we take it all off again!!!

Hello there farmer! well the long and short of it is that you need to have a guide to bring a vehicle into China. the cheapest I have seen this done was by www.nessiesadventures.com/index_files/china2.htmwho I think it cost about £1500, but they shared a guide between vehicles. the guide is provided for you by the state, and is primarily there to keep an eye on you. we are currently thinking of changing our minds and driving through to Bangladesh and shipping to thailand from there. Although we do have other reasons to, mainly one of the people we are going to visit is going to move from china to india. Drop me and email, you can get the address from the website, www.jollyfollies.com, if you have more questions. what othjer plansdo you have for the trip? Always interested in sharing ideas Cheers Ollie

hi ya ollie, thanks for your reply,
We were hoping to leave about august next year, driving through Norway, Sweden, Finland (my other half, Danielle (aka Bob!) wants to see the northen lights. so we go north!!) On through Russia and Siberia to lake Baikai then turn south to Mongolia, China ect.
Well that was the plan, have been doing as much research as possable and drawn the same conclusion as yourselfs (and almost everyone else) about china!!!
So We're not too sure what to do now! as we are finding out a trip like this requires a little more than 5 minutes planning and although we'd like to go with someone else I don't think we're gonna find anyone + where do you find them?
Work on the landie (not yet named) is slow and we've just moved house which has slowed things even more!!! We'll get there!!! We've been following your website and found is really interesting and useful!

Hi there Dom, Your route sounds almost identical to our original route, when we first started. We were going to head up for some Ice Hotel, Husky Dog sledging and Northern lights, but changed our minds when the ferry we were looking to catch got canceled. the real reason was the cash, and the fact that because it's European we could , in theory, do it anytime. China is doable, but again it came down to hard cash, and a couple of other issues. I think it might be worth persevering if you do have the cash, because it is in such flux China is worth seeing now. But .... cash! With respect to the route, we solved the last major issue by putting a big loop in. perhaps you could do the same, and go from Mongolia to the Stans (you would need multi entry visa to Russia, but I think this is not a problem), then Iran, Pakistan and onto India. get to see some fantastic places and get to India. we are now aiming for India and we will decide there whether we ship to Oz or Thailand. I think it we both want to continue driving, so will aim for Thailand, but by then, who knows ... Do you use the HUBB? Lots of info on there, and also lots of people looking for travel partners. Also Africa Overland? Not just African trips on there, plenty of world travelers. www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/www.africa-overland.net/Hope the move went OK. we abouts are you? If your local and fancy meeting up, well give us a shout. we're based in Southampton. Can swap some ideas, go for some greenlaning or have a pint. Also we're heading to Billing Land Rover festival in two weeks. I think there are still tickets left. We'll be meeting some other overlanders there too, including martin, who runs Africa Overland. www.billinglandrovershow.co.uk/Right, best do some work Cheers Ollie

hi ollie,
Having problems getting the broadband set up in the new pad so please excuse my late reply! Our long term plan is to emigrate out to oz so seeing some of europe is defenitly part of our plan! We've started to look into the same sort of route, but planning has ground to stop without the broadband!!! I think our revised plan is to do China by foot on our way back from oz.
The move went well Thanks, We're just outside Gatwick so not too far from you. Certainly up for meeting up, but Bob says I'm not allowed out to play until I finish the bathroom! Saying that We are off to Chichester tommorrow to Core 4x4 for our first play day! Plan is to play untill christmas then the overhaul begins. She has been christened 'Brandy' and requires new engine, the 2 1/4 perkins is just too slow to even think about taking around the world. So we're also looking for a shot disco for a new engine!
We were really hoping to do Billing also but unfortunatly the people at the Landrover factory wanted their own birthday party and we've been roped into work.
I will e-mail you soon as I've done the bathroom. Hope the weather holds out for next weekend!!! Catch you soon. Dom

Hi there Dom. well Billing worked out good for us. we met up with quite a few people who had previously done some trips, and got some great hints and tips. Some of those we met were Steve and Michelle from www.whitecottagewebsites.co.uk/africa/And Matin and Debbie from www.bigsky-adventures.com/martin also runs www.africa-overland.net/So it was great sharing ideas with these guys. Also it seems like there is some momentum gathering on the HUBB for some sort of Southerm 4x4 meet, so that could end up interesting. Anyhow. Drop us a mail at somepoint and hopefully we can arrange some sort of meet up.
