Hi guys We're from Australia and plan to overland the UK and Africa in 2010 - we found your page from www.africa-overland.net
Anyway, when in Australia, you might like to visit a few of our favourite places: (in no particular order!)
1. Jervis Bay, NSW & Pigeon House Mountain (nearby). If you come in winter, you can watch pods of minke whales swim past a lookout near a broken lighthouse. The nearby town Huskisson is a great base, and nearby Hyamm's beach has the whitest sand in the world. 2. Victoria's Great Ocean Road & 12 Apostles - what a drive! 3. Lake Eccles National Park (it's an extinct volcano, near the 12 Apostles) 4. Cow Bay and Cape Tribulation in Far North Queensland - it really is reef-beach-thick rainforest 5. Magnetic Island, off the coast of Townsville. Take the Landy over on the barge and enjoy driving the most powerful car on the whole island - all the other cars are worn out mini mokes. 6. Sydney harbour is always worth a look 7. 4wding the local tracks behind Victoria's Yarra Valley wineries. Then drop into Domain Chandon for a free self-guided tour. Google: "Toolangi" 8. The Grampians National Park in Victoria is a great place to take your Landy: aboriginal rock art is easy enough to find if you have good maps. 9. Mataranka thermal pools (a few hours south of Darwin) are a great place to stop if you're driving the Stuart Hwy. 10. The rainforest and logging/4wd tracks behind Cardwell (North Qld) are worth a look - terrific waterfalls and you can drive right down to them. 11. Fitzroy Falls and Kangaroo Valley (about 2 hrs south of Sydney) is a tranquil place with some nice walks. Take the Landy to visit the other waterfalls in the area (all marked on local maps).
all the best with your trip - we've heard import duties in China can be *very* expensive. Maybe carry on through Siberia instead?

Hello there Alistair and Jess!
Thanks for the complete guide to Oz Really nice to see you site too. It looks likeyou will be travelling in about the same time frame as us, so will be interesting to compare notes.
I see you guys are Land Rover fans too. One thing I'd love to grab of you are any Land Rover contacts you may have in Oz? We have been warned that there may be a shortage of Land rover parts and help once we arrive. I'm guessing this might not be as bad as its made out?
Anyway, thansk again and nice to see you on the board and to see your web site .
Cheers
Ollie

Oh don't worry about LR bits in Australia.
The dealers are very good at supplying parts around the country. There are also some excellent LR mechanics in Qld, NSW and Vic. Darwin is probably the worst, but ask the Land Rover forum on www.aulro.com for help finding someone to fix things.
The Landy clubs are also a good source of info: www.LROCV.com.au (Vic) and http://www.lroc.com.au/ (NSW) are the two biggest.
We certainly have no problem looking after our 40 yr old LR - but we do stay away from most 'average' mechanics. We only take ours to a specialised LR wrecker/mechanic and we have no problems. Usually same day servicing too!
all the best!
